This Design Consultation Agreement is made on [Contract Date] between [Company Name] ("Designer") and [Client Name] ("Client").

1. The Consultation

Designer will visit Client's home at [address, date, and time] for a two-hour design consultation. Designer will give advice on [the rooms and topics, for example: the living room and kitchen layout, paint colors, lighting, and which furniture to keep or replace].

2. Written Summary

Within five business days of the visit, Designer will send a written summary of the recommendations, with paint colors and up to 10 product suggestions with links.

3. What's Not Included

The consultation doesn't include drawings, plans, mood boards, purchasing, coordinating contractors, or further visits. Designer can provide these under a separate agreement. Time beyond two hours, at Client's request, is billed at $175 per hour in half-hour increments.

4. Fee and Payment

The fee is $450, covering the two-hour visit and the written summary, with travel within 25 miles included. It's paid in full when booking, and the visit is confirmed once paid.

5. Rescheduling and Cancellation

Client may reschedule once, or cancel for a full refund, with at least 48 hours' notice. With less notice, the fee is non-refundable. If Designer needs to reschedule, Client may choose a new date or a full refund.

6. Client's Decisions

Client decides whether and how to act on the advice, and is responsible for purchases, for hiring contractors, and for checking that products and changes suit the home, including measurements and building rules. Electrical, plumbing, and structural work should be done by licensed professionals. Designer doesn't supervise any work.

7. Products

Suggested products are sold by others, and their prices and availability can change. If Designer earns a commission or trade discount on any product it suggests, it will say so in the summary.

8. Photos

Designer may photograph the rooms for reference when preparing the summary, and won't share the photos without Client's permission.

9. Limitation of Liability

Designer's total liability for any claim related to the consultation is limited to the fee paid.

10. Agreement

This agreement is governed by the laws of [state or country]. It is the entire agreement between the parties, and may only be changed in writing. By signing below, both parties agree to these terms.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in an interior design consultation?

The designer visits the home, looks at the rooms with the client, and gives advice on layout, color, lighting, and furniture, often followed by a short written summary. Drawings and purchasing are usually separate services.

Should a design consultation be paid in advance?

Most designers take payment when the visit is booked. It confirms the appointment and avoids chasing a small invoice after the visit.

Is this design consultation agreement template free?

Yes. Read and copy the full text on this page, or edit it online and see it as your client will. When it's ready, start a free Clientary trial to send it or download it as a PDF.

Has a lawyer reviewed this template?

No. It's a general starting point written by Clientary, not legal advice, and it hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer for your situation or the laws where you and your client work. Have your own counsel review it before you use or sign it.
